Over 65,000 Chinese speaking learners have enrolled in UQ MOOCs on the XuetangX platform

The University of Queensland has partnered with education platform XuetangX to offer five massive open online courses (MOOCs) in Chinese, attracting an audience of more than 65,000 learners.

XuetangX, launched by Tsinghua University in 2013, is the biggest Chinese language MOOC platform, offering more than 1000 courses to six million users around the world.

UQ’s popular The Science of Everyday Thinkingdelivered on XuetangX by UQ academics and supported by Chinese instructors, has had more than 50,000 users register since its release on the platform two years ago.

XuetangX Chairman and Tsinghua University Deputy Secretary-General Dr Nie Fenghua said the opportunities offered by the Internet to impart knowledge had produced a boom in online courses offered by prestigious universities like UQ.

“Our company feels greatly proud that Chinese learners can use our platform to access high quality courses from Australian Universities.”

UQ Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Joanne Wright said UQ’s partnership with XuetangX provided a valuable opportunity to raise UQ’s profile among Chinese learners and to give them an insight into UQ’s excellent teaching, research and on-campus experience.

“I am delighted that UQ’s MOOCs are reaching a wide Chinese audience through the XuetangX portal,” she said.

“UQ’s partnership with XuetangX extends the reach of our on-campus offerings to Chinese speaking people.

“The XuetangX online experience also reminds Chinese learners that UQ offers world-class campus-based learning for those who may wish to continue their learning with us.”

UQ’s Chinese language MOOCs on XuetangX can be accessed here, and the full catalogue of UQ’s English language MOOCs is available on edX.

XuetangX – a consortium of leading Chinese universities – and The University of Queensland have both partnered with online learning platform edX.
